Were They A Real Hockey Team?

The Mighty Ducks

The Disney Company originally owned the franchise that was established in 1993 and dubbed to be Mighty Ducks of Anaheim after the 1992 Disney movie centered on a children’s ice hockey team, The Mighty Ducks. Fortunately, Teemu Selanne and Paul Kariya were the two high-scoring forwards that led the team to their first playoff berth in 1996–97 after having consecutive losing seasons. Unfortunately, after the successful 1996-97 season, the team suffered in successive seasons with three last-place divisional finishes between 1997–98 and 2001–02.

The story changed for the seventh-seeded Ducks in the 2002-03 season when they made a stunning postseason run which propelled them into the Stanley Cup Finals. Thanks to the heroic performance by Jean-Sébastien Giguère, the team’s goaltender. Even though the Ducks were defeated by New Jersey Devils, Jean-Sébastien was awarded the most valuable player of the postseason. In 2005, Disney Company sold the hockey team to Henry and Susan Samueli, and the name was changed to Anaheim Ducks.

In the 2006-07 season, the Ducks, for the very first time, were crowned the winner of the division championship. The winning Ducks team was led by Selanne with some developing stars like Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf. Furthermore, the Ducks defeated the Ottawa Senators after losing just five games in the following postseason to claim the Stanley Cup championship. The team really tried to post some winning records in the four seasons after winning the title. But they were not able to move past the second round of the playoffs.

Unfortunately, the Ducks had a last-place finish in the 2011-12 season. However, in the 2012-13 season, they won their second division title in the team’s history. The Ducks set a franchise record when they won the division title with 54 wins in 2013-14. They finish that season with the best record in the Western Conference. Also, the Ducks captured their fourth consecutive division title in 2015-16 but failed to progress to the second round of the postseason. After nabbing yet another division title in 2016–17, the Ducks failed to succeed in the conference finals.
